"Renewing The Promise Annual Meeting Set For November 10th
|
The Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet of Tulsa Partners, Inc. is scheduled for Monday, November 10, 2008 at 6 p.m. at the Bernsen Community Life Center Great Hall, 4th Floor, 700 S. Boston. The keynote speaker will be Secretary of State Susan Savage, who participated in the Project Impact signing ceremony in November 1998 as Mayor of Tulsa. The 10th anniversary of that ceremony will be celebrated at the annual meeting. Susan Savage was appointed Oklahoma Secretary of State by Governor Brad Henry on January 13, 2003. Prior to her service with the State of Oklahoma, Savage served as the Mayor of Tulsa from 1992 to 2002. She won the seat in 1992 in a special election among a field of 54 candidates, completing two years of an unexpired term. Savage was re-elected for two four year terms in 1994 and 1998, making her the most tenured and first woman mayor in Tulsa's history. Tulsa Partners will also present its annual awards during the meeting. Awards to be conferred include the J.D. Lovell Receives Recognition From Islamic Society
|
Tulsa Partners Executive Director Tim Lovell was recognized at the Islamic Society of Tulsa's Goodwill Appreciation Annual Awards Dinner held in August. Lovell was nominated by Sheryl Siddiqui and the award was presented by Michael Egan.
In the award remarks, Lovell was cited for serving as one of the driving forces in the founding of the Language and Culture Bank, and for including the Peace Academy as one of the pilot schools for the Children's Disaster Prepereness Workshops that were part of Tulsa Partners' Save The Children grant in 2007.
"Tim Lovell had enough forsight and experience to know that minority groups must also be included in (the City of Tulsa's disaster) plan for Tulsa to be truly safe. Tim was concerned for the people who were not being recognized in the original plan and who were at risk due to difference in language, culture or ethnicity."
Congratulations, Tim!

DRBC |
A special thanks to our Disaster Resistant Business Council volunteers who have been giving presentations on business continuity planning. Bob Roberts and Pam Nielsen spoke to 150 people at a meeting sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and held at the Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors. Bob Roberts also traveled to Altus, Oklahoma at the invitation of the local emergency manager to present the IBHS Open For Business course to representatives from emergency management, the local business community and the U.S. Air Force. Dave Hall has recently given presentations to the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, the Native American Business Network and Tulsa Midtown Rotary Club.
The Child Care Resource Center continues to offer training to child care centers on emergency and business continuity planning in a program initially developed with Tulsa Partners' DRBC. The DRBC has also continued discussions with the Tulsa Metro Chamber on interpreting and using data from the Ice Storm survey conducted earlier this year.

Resilient and Ready
|
Tulsa Partners volunteers have been diligent in their efforts this fall to teach children and thier parents disaster preparedness. Over 170 children participated in Save The Children's Resilient and Ready workshops in September, and an additional 200 children are scheduled to attend
workshops in October. The program plans to reach 600 total children by the end of the year. Resilient and Ready offers community-based recovery and resilience-building programs for children. These workshops, also known as psychosocial programs because they address children's personal, emotional and social needs, use cooperative games and structured play, expressive and art activities to help children learn how to cope with thier feelings and how to be prepared for a disaster. Through Tulsa's Resilient and Ready program, each child attending the workshop receives a backpack filled with disaster kit items including a Family Preparedness Guide to give to thier parents. After a workshop at the Tulsa Public Schools' Cooper Elementary School, Penni Chandler, Resilient and Ready Coordinator, received an email that one of the parents had called the school to say that thier family was going to assemble a disaster kit for the entire family and clean out a closet to make a safe place for disasters. "isn't it amazing to know that this program reached a family through one child, who listened to one volunteer, who was able to be at the school through one donation!" said Chandler. Tulsa Partners received funding for the Resilient and Ready program through the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the Cox Connects Foundation. If you are interested in volunteering with the program, please email Penni Chandler at penni.chandler@tulsapartners.org
